Improvisation workshops

Not just for violins!

Fun 90 minute group improvisation workshops for musicians on any instrument who would like to build a useful 'toolkit' to assist with improvisation. Classes can be taken individually or as a block of six sessions. Tuesdays at 7pm-8:30pm

The cost is £16 per session or £80 for the block of six (5 for the price of six). All sessions must be booked and paid for in advance.

6 week improvisation course content:

Session 1, 25/11/25
Intervals: naming, playing and recognising them. Ear training and transposing into different keys.

Session 2, 09/12/25
Scales: internalising the sound of each. How to use them in your improvisation.

Session 3, 06/01/26
Arpeggios: identifying and internalising the sound. Use them in your improvisation, combine them with scales, identify them in example tunes.

Session 4, 20/01/26
Musicality: phrasing and melodic development. Leaving space, taking time, tempo variations and more. Learning from other players.

Session 5, 03/02/26
Rhythm: rhythm can make a simple line exciting. In this session we'll practice rhythmic licks, using different rhythms for different styles.

Session 6, 17/02/26
Fluency and Speed: how does tension affect your playing? Relax and take time, be aware of your tendencies. How can you simplify your ideas during a performance if conditions or nerves are against you?

It's important to note that this is not a jazz improvisation course, but a look at improvisation techniques across different genres. It's suitable for musicians on all instruments with at least a basic playing level, who are relatively new to improvisation and would like to gain confidence. Jazz will form a part of it but we'll work with other styles too. It's more about learning to create melodies and harmonies over a chord progression or melody rather than the study of any particular style.

Please send a message via the contact me button below to join the group for any or all of the sessions. Individual sessions do stand alone so can be taken in isolation or as a block of six. Students of the full course will leave with a really useful 'toolkit' which will prove invaluable for future improvising.
