Folk music workshops

Not just for violins!

Fortnightly on Tuesdays at 7pm-8:30pm.

Fun 90 minute folk workshops for musicians on any instrument who would like to learn to play folk tunes in a group setting. Classes can be taken individually or as a block of six sessions. The cost is £16 per session or £80 for six (5 for the price of six). All sessions must be booked and paid for in advance.

In this workshop we'll learn and work with a folk tune, reading from music for those that are able to, and by ear for those that can't. The objective is to develop our playing through learning and playing selected tunes, lerning to work with different parts and roles in an ensemble setting ultimately working towards a performance.

During the class we will:

  • learn to play the tune

  • develop our playing, adding dynamics and expression

  • play the tune together as an ensemble thinking about the different sounds of each instrument and how they interact

  • consider how to play as a group rather than solo, learning the etiquette and skills associated with group playing

  • have loads of fun

Folk music to me is anything that is communicated via an oral tradition, that can be Irish, French Canadian, Cajun, Scottish, English, Old time, Klezmer, Gypsy Jazz, Balkan... so much to choose from and I'm open to suggestions. Luckily for us much of it has been transcribed so we can learn easily via the dots if need be. I will announce the tune of the week in advance to give those that want to work by ear plenty of time to get up to speed.

I will also be rerunning the improvisation course on alternate Tuesdays for anyone that would like to repeat anything they missed, or redo elements. More on that here
